Fine for the Tattie holidays

The mid term holidays are here for Scotland and the settled spell looks set to continue into next week.

Fine for the Tattie holidays

Issued: 9th October 2015 11:38
Updated: 12th October 2015 09:27

Update Monday 12th. This morning's early rain is clearing off into the North Sea, leaving behind plenty of fine and bright but cool weather. There will be showers from the NW, for northern parts of the mainland and the Islands but elsewhere a fair day. Tuesday starts slowly alogn the east coast with a breeze off the sea but improves. Then high pressure takes hold and brings sunny, settled weather before a weather front sweeps down through Scotland on Thursday. This will arrive in the NW and clear from the SE.
Farmers looking for a bit of late warmnth for their crops, such as cauliflowers maybe disappointed. There will be some sunshine midweek but the nights are chilly, with a touch of ground frost about.

Half term holidays may still feel a long way off for teachers in England and Wales but Tattie holidays are here for Scotland, one or two weeks off, depending on your local authority.  This was the time that children left the classroom and went out in the fields to help pick the annual potato crop (in the good olde days). Parents are already asking, will the weather be fine, are the kids going to be stuck indoors all week?

The answer is no, not due to the weather at any rate. Wrestling to get them away from a tablet or computer game is another issue. October has seen long spells of fine settled weather and another area of high pressure will come in from the west, replacing the one fading off into the North Sea this weekend. It’s never going to be that warm, so don’t get carried away but dry and bright is good enough for mid October. It could have been a whole lot worst.

This weekend is slightly mixed with a lot of cloud but then more sunshien will appear for the start and middle of next week.
It will be cool by day and decidedly chilly by night, touch of frost likely inland. It is a fair way off but here are signs of a change from Thursday, with rain moving through but overall it looks like a settled, fine but cool week with sunny spells.

And if the rain does eventually arrive you can always keep an eye on it's progress on the Netweather Storm app. (iOS and Android). The actual rain radar sequence runs on your phone, the image shows Friday's current rain over NW Scotland but dry elsewhere.
