The first pronounced cold spell for nearly two years is here, with hard frosts, snow and wintry showers the theme of the next week as the UK sits in a much colder air flow from the north at first, and briefly from the east later next week before high pressure noses in and blocks it's path.

After a snowless year for most last year, the next few days brings a good chance of seeing at least a flake or two as wintry showers make their way down the country, while northern hills and mountains could see significant accumulations at times.  You can check the Snow Risk charts for the next few days, or use the quick Will It Snow forecast for your town or postcode to see if you are in line for anything wintry.

UK Snow Risk & Snow Level 0600 Sunday 18th Jan

It's not just the risk of sleet and snow that needs watching out for, as some very hard frosts are on the way, with overnight minimums as low as -15c for rural areas in Scotland, and windespread sub zero temperatures.  So please watch out for untreated surfaces and keep in mind that some people might need a little help getting around over the next few days as they try to keep warm.  Again, you can check your local Will It Be Frosty forecast to keep track of just how cold it could get overnight

Minimum Temps 0600 Monday 20th Jan

If you're like Michael Fish, and enjoy the wintry weather, it's been a long time coming, and for now it looks like hanging around for at least the next week.
