Where's my 100 days of snow?

Winter's coming and apparently it will be cold with fog, and maybe snow, don't you know. Or 'Worst ever snowfalls, record breaking temperatures and a fog worse than 1952', which will sell those newspapers?

We all love discussing the weather, quoting a little snippet of information at the shops, at work, school gates. Dropping a line which may or may not come off. “Snow next week, so they say”. “This summer is going to be really hot, I heard”.  “Terrible winter headlines in the papers today”, Mmmm Mmmm! If it does work out you can feel pleased that you forewarned others, if not, just forget it quietly. However, this can’t be the case if you are volunteering your “forecast” to national newspapers who then scream their crazed headlines in sync with the seasons

Quick and easy guide to seasonal weather headlines

Summer – killer heat wave, record breaking temperatures,
Autumn – hurricane force winds and destructive flooding,
Winter- 100days of snow, worst winter this century, this millennium, ever including ice ages, record breaking low temperatures.
Spring – amazing freak heat wave due to global warming.

In reality, seasons in the UK : summer is warmest, expect more sunshine, winter is colder, snow is more likely but not guaranteed (re-last year).

If you scream every year winter is going to be really cold and bring SOOO much snow, one year you will be technically right. But that doesn’t make it a useful forecast. I could publish a forecast --Nottingham, it's going to rain today Mon, Nottm it's going to rain today Tues, Nottm ... etc. In the end I will be right, but big deal.
However, if you made such a bodge of it last year, don’t come back this year and just say the same. The boy who cried wolf to you! Eventually, the wolf did come and look what happened. And more importantly it lessens the impact of a forecast when serious weather is really coming.

Weather in the general media has discussion of the day’s latest media eruptions. A good place to catch up with any tabloid stories

Stratosphere Temp. Watch and October Pattern Index (OPI) monitoring are more technical threads but there are some exciting themes emerging.

And for those already counting the sleeps til the big day, there’s the White Christmas 2014 thread.
