Heat and thundery rain this weekend

Becoming warm and humid this weekend but with the risk of heavy downpours.

Heat and thundery rain this weekend

Issued: 5th June 2014 10:15
Updated: 5th June 2014 10:36

Temperatures are set to rise this weekend, 26C has appeared on the forecast charts for Saturday that's nearly 80 Fahrenheit. However, it is not a dry sunny picture to accompany that heat. More like a wet and thundery one for some parts of the UK. The image below shows rainfall totals for the whole of Saturday. The orange parts show areas which could see the heaviest rainfall, across northern England, the Midlands, SW and central Scotland and SW England with over an inch of rain in total.

The heavy showers then spill up through Scotland during Saturday night, towards the NW Highlands. The weekend showers won't affect all areas, as always with these downpours, some areas escape and 10 miles down the road there is localised flooding. This forecast is just a heads up that the warm, humid air pulling up across the UK brings enough energy and moisture for very lively downpours.

For example, this radar image from May shows how different the weather can be in this kind of situation, as thundery showers come up across the Channel in lines of clusters. Saturday will bring this showery pattern and there is uncertainity this far ahead as to who will see the sunshine and who gets a soggy Saturday. Keep an eye on the updates on Netweather-  Jo
