Showery Sunday, Then Very Cold Tonight

More showers today. Sunday night perhaps the coldest since last autumn. Mostly dry Monday. Patchy rain on Tuesday. Then a cold easterly wind from mid-week, with the best of any dry and bright weather in the north and west.

Showery Sunday, Then Very Cold Tonight

Sunday will see another day of showers, but they will become increasingly confined to eastern areas this afternoon, as a ridge of high pressure builds in from the west. Then with clearing skies tonight, we could be looking at the coldest night since last autumn, with temperatures widely falling below freezing, even in towns and cities. Into next week, although we will see cloud and rain across many areas on Tuesday, northern and western areas will stay mostly dry Monday to Friday. But it will remain on the chilly side, as we see a cold easterly wind develop from mid-week, which will bring more in the way of cloud and some light showers to central and eastern areas.

For now, we have showers from the word go across northern and western areas, bringing hail in places and snow over the hills and also we have a line of showers across eastern England. But elsewhere, it's a bright and crisp start after a cold and, in places, frosty night. These showers will continue to move through most areas this morning on the cold northwesterly wind, though some areas may escape the showers. Showers will become increasingly confined to central and eastern England as we go through the afternoon, though they may still be heavy with a risk of hail and thunder. Northern and western areas generally seeing a drier and brighter afternoon, as that ridge of high pressure builds in from the west. Temperatures will reach 6-8C in the north, 8-11C in the south at best, so notably colder across SE England than last Sunday, when we saw 20.1C reached in London. Feeling cold in the northwesterly wind.

Showers will eventually clear southeast England and East Anglia later this evening, then with clearing skies and winds falling light, a rather cold and frosty night to come, with temperatures falling as low as -4C in the south, -6C in the north, which could make it colder than any night we've had during the past winter.

So a cold, bright and crisp morning on Monday, with some icy windscreens to scrape. Most areas will remain dry and fine with sunny spells for much of the day, however, we will see a band of cloud, rain and stronger winds slowly edge in across SW England, Wales, Northern Ireland and eventually SW Scotland.

The band of cloud and patchy rain will then gradually spread east across most areas Monday night and Tuesday morning, before stalling then drifting back west and fizzling out later on Tuesday, as we see a strengthening northeasterly wind develop in the east. So a cloudy and damp day for many areas on Tuesday, though Northern Ireland and western Scotland may be bright or sunny.

Turning drier and more settled across northern and western areas from mid-week, as high pressure builds to the north and northeast. A raw easterly wind developing across central and eastern parts will bring in cloudier skies with some rain at times later on Wednesday and through Thursday, but most areas may end up dry and bright on Friday.
