Here is a VERY large article on the potential climatological impacts of deforestation in the tropics...

http://www.edf.org/documents/4930_tropicaldeforestation_and_climatechange.pdf

PS: I have only skimmed it so far! :)

 I looked and I thought :shok:

Seriously though.. this is one thing I tried to discuss a while ago.. We need to protect these areas. Our governments have the power to do something about it and they just ignore the problem. We pay money out to develop sustained forestry in the UK and in Europe. We're not doing the same on a world wide basis.

I'll be honest Pete, I've not looked through all of it yet but I will.. The solution to the problem is far simpler than most of the climate change stuff but once again, it is a political solution...

Thanks for the digging Pete!

Again I'm reminded of the folk who cannot accept (readily) that we can impact our atmosphere by our 'needs' yet can appear equally appalled (as the majority of us) at the way we treat the surface (and oceans) of the planet.

At times I wish our impacts aloft were as visible as our impacts here on the ground.

Some of the changes we have made to our oceans (temp/acidification) are equally invisible and I often wonder whether the folk who dismiss the potential impacts we have made to our atmosphere (via our pollution) are equally dismissive of these 'invisible' impacts also.

In all honesty, GW, we are doing far more to the surface of the Earth than we are to the atmosphere. Add to that the fact that the atmosphere is far bigger than the surface of the Earth, and we are doing far less to it...

This thread is about deforestation - please don't turn it back into your old argument again...

Deforestation and Climate Change...something I was taught at school some 15 years+ ago.

For me, it has some very interesting relevence, but seems to have forgotten since we focused on CO2 emissions.

This is one of the most important issues that need to be addressed, both with respect to climate change and biodiversity loss, water balance, drought, exploitation, political will, loads of reasons. It should be at the tope end of any program which attempts to address the possible future problems and issues for our planet.
