The winter of 1931-32 was virtually snowless

December 1931: Generally anticyclonic and mild with a little snow from a northerly at the end of the month.

January 1932 was a very mild month wth a CET of 6.3. The weather pattern was set in stone through the month with high pressure to the southeast and low pressure to the northwest and the UK in a mild southwesterly flow. Only on the 7th was there with a wind with a notable northerly component. This resulted in a mild month with few frosts and little snow. On the 18th, in Morayshire, a maximum of 16.1C was recorded due to the Fohn effect.

February 1932 was a generally cold and very anticyclonic month. As a result of the anticyclonic conditions, it was an exceptionally dry month.

December 1931

CET: 5.3 (+0.8]

January 1932

CET: 6.3 (+2.1)

2th-6th: 9.9

16th-20th: 9.6

February 1932

CET 2.9 (-1.3)

8th-21st: 1.4

February is the 3rd driest February on record with just 8.9mm for England and Wales.

For Scotland and Northern Ireland, February is the driest February in the Areal series for both countries.

Not surprisingly, the winter of 1931-32 was virtually snowless

Stornoway recorded only 3 days of falling snow in the whole of the winter months. Thats how bad winter 1931-32 was for snow.

As I mentioned in another thread, the Decembers of 1929-34 inclusive were largely snowless.

1931-32: 5

1932-33: 12

1933-34: 4

Such positivism.

Such immaculate timing with the hangovers and resultant grumpy moods around when they all crawl out of bed later.

Your passport in date? <_<

Pressure anomalies and means for February 1932

feb1932b010.jpg

feb1932a009.jpg

The mean pressure reading for February 1932

Malin Head: 1035.4mb (+25.7mb)

Stornoway: 1034.8mb (+27.0mb)

Pretty remarkable figures.

Seathwaite, normally, a wet place recorded no rainfall during the month.

At the end of the month, Ben Nevis, only had a slight covering in the top 500ft of the mountain.

Thinking back to this winter.

A very mild January and a chilly anticyclonic  February. Across Scotland, there was bit more of an Atlantic influence so it wasn't quite as chilly but it was still a very dry month.

Both killed snow chances that winter, the zonal mildness and the anticyclonicity

This winter is one for the record surely

Oh well only 11 months to wait till November...

Let's hope we get a hot summer

And no summer northerly winds

Soda law we will get snow in May.

This is the quietest I've seen this site

In a long time...

Just to let the good folk on here know, that in December of this winter, it snowed on 28 days out of the 31 and so far this January it has snowed 23 days out of the 28 days of January, somewhere in the UK west of a line from Exeter to the Wash. It might not have snowed where you are but there has been plenty occurrences this winter...and we are not into February yet. 51 out of the 59 ain't bad especially when of those 8 days when it didn't snow, there was no precipitation because of a sitting high pressure area.

We didn't suffer alone this winter. The winter of 1931/1932 (also November 1931) is historic across the eastern portion of America for being extraordinarily mild and snowless. Interesting article here:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2022/02/14/warmest-winter-1931-midatlantic/

This forum also details this blowtorch winter.

Was looking through some records and came across this winter. It was Indianapolis' second least snowy winter on record with only 5.9" of snow (0.2" in DJF). I noticed that Chicago had 24.6", well below average but...

Very mild winter for much of the Northern Hemisphere

London didn't record a maximum of a least 50°F during February 1932 for the first time during February since 1895

One of those winters where the south of the UK did better for wintry weather than further north
