I was going to do a WINTER FORECAST type announcement, giving a teaser - then I dsocovered you have to have one fo those dinky coloured names to be able to do that (they're going to run out of colours soon - mark my words); then I thought I'd do a snowman type post along the lines of 'I shall be issuing my winter forecast next week', and then I thought, what the hell, go for the full Telford.

SATSIGS is back, for a third season. I'm sure Shuggee will reopen the winter lexicon thread, or repost the document that (I think it was) he (who) so diligently created. And somewhere there will be the definitions of the various ramp alerts, and the Abingdon scale of disappointment, how to measure snowfall, and I'm sure JJBMcB - our mascot and honorary President - will be along soon.

We all know the real reason that most people are on here is NOT to read the charts, the models, or SB's numerous winter forecasts; it's to ramp, and SATSIGs is here to provide a comforting blanket of sanity at those times when FI turns deep purple and 'all around are losing theirs'.

SATSIGs will also be sponsoring for a second season the fantasy winter league - all in good time. We might even produce the results from last year eventually: though I think it was a five-way tie.

Hello.

Abingdon may no longer be the most realistic scale of disappointment, as I was anything but disappointed on two separate occasions last winter.

Aah, but it retains a special place in our heart.

I think this year we may also introduce another SI (Satsigs Indicator) unit - the Telford, indicating units of exaggeration.

It may be possible to combine Abingdons and Telfords, though the way that some people on here carry on there may be no scale long enough to account for the genuine excesses of disappointment when it nos very heavily.

Are you trying to suggest that reports of sleetmen in Telford in October were made up?

'Teldons' perhaps...

I would like to say that the 'older personages' on our local bus are convinced we're 'in for a cold one'. More news from over the garden fence later....

I'd like to propose a Somerset in place of an Abingdon; it just doesn't snow down here. I believe there may be an historical verification available for this; Scott (he of Antartica fame) lived in my village and there is a general concensus locally that is was the dearth of the white stuff in these parts which led to him satisfy his craving in foreign climes.

I'm concerned at the repeated use of a little 's' at the end of the SATSIGS acronym. Is this an indication of the likelihood of the fabled white precipitation this season?

Great stuff, SATSIGS is back, and funnily enough so am I!

Nearly November, from midnight tomorrow I start looking at charts. Whens it going to snow then?

The most snowless place in Britain is probably Penzance down in the extreme SW. It rarely snows there even on the few occasions that there is snow in places like St Mawgan and Exeter.

Er what are SATSIGs?

"S*d All The Science It's Going to Snow" I vaguely recall.

Think we need to create a map for potential ramp hotspots across the UK, if I remember rightly some familiar and well known areas are: the end of the A21 in East Sussex; a large town on the edge Cambridgeshire Fens; a Shropshire town on the M54; and a Cumbrian border town - to name a few.

You've got an extra 't' in there Nick - Sod All The Science It's Gonna Snow.

Much more apt :)

Well spotted shuggs, still intrigued by the small 's' at the end though.

Early level 1 ramp in the Model Output Discussion of obscene cold in the charts at t+384 I noticed from the environs of SE London.

It's a habit. I spotted the same thing earlier and thought - it's wrong. Hey-ho.

I for one have promised the citizens of Hastings that they are beyond reproach and granted immunity from RAMP alerts. I think it's rather like those towns and cities in the 70s that declared themelves 'nuclear free'.
